Our Austin work is mostly homeowners paying for a new roof themselves rather than through an insurance claim. That makes the question simple to state and harder to answer: is metal worth the extra cost on this particular house, or will a good shingle do the job for less? We would rather help you answer that honestly than sell you on one material.
Because we install both metal and asphalt shingle, we have no stake in which one you pick. On an Austin job we will price metal and shingle on the same estimate, measured off the same roof, so the gap between them is a number you can actually weigh instead of a guess from a brochure.
For the wider picture of how we work in this city, from older central ranches to newer southwest subdivisions, see our roofing contractor in Austin page. For a deeper look at panel types, heat and hail, our main metal roofing page goes into the details.

Metal Roofing for Austin Homes, Old and New
Austin’s houses are not one type, and metal suits some of them better than others. The low hip-roofed ranches in Crestview and Allandale, many built between the late 1940s and the 1970s, often have long, simple roof planes. Shapes like that take metal panels well, and a metal roof can look right at home on a mid-century ranch.
Those older roofs have usually been redone more than once, though, so before we talk about panels we look at what is under the current roof. Old decking and patched eaves have to be sound before anything new goes on top, metal or not, and that work shows up on the estimate as its own line.
Homes in Circle C Ranch and similar southwest subdivisions, mostly built from the mid-1990s on, tend to have more hips, valleys and dormers. Every one of those needs custom flashing on a metal roof, which adds cost. We will tell you plainly if your roof’s shape makes metal a harder sell.
Metal vs. Shingles in Central Texas Heat
Austin summers are the strongest argument for metal here. The city averaged 29 days a year at or above 100 degrees between 1991 and 2020, and that kind of sun slowly cooks asphalt shingles until they turn brittle and shed granules. A metal panel does not dry out that way.
Metal is not automatically cooler, though. A light or reflective finish sends more sunlight back off the roof than a dark one, and a charcoal metal roof will still get very hot. The attic matters too: if it is poorly vented, the upstairs will stay warm whatever is on top. We check the vents on every Austin inspection and put any airflow fix on the estimate.
Standing Seam Metal Roofing or Exposed-Fastener Panels
We price two kinds of metal roof, and the difference comes down to where the screws go.
- Standing seam: long panels joined at raised seams, with the fasteners tucked out of sight beneath them. It is the cleaner look and the lower-maintenance choice, and the more expensive of the two.
- Exposed-fastener: overlapping ribbed panels screwed through the face, each screw sealed by a rubber washer. It costs less, but in Austin’s sun those washers age, so the screws need checking over the life of the roof. It often makes sense on a detached garage, shop or patio cover.
What Drives the Cost of Metal Roof Installation
We do not publish prices, and a per-square-foot number from the internet will not tell you much about your house. What moves the price is the size and pitch of the roof, how many valleys, chimneys and vents it has, what shape the decking is in, and which panel system and finish you choose.
As a general order, architectural shingle usually comes in lowest, Class 4 impact-resistant shingle above it, exposed-fastener metal above that, and standing seam highest. How long you plan to stay in the house usually decides whether the extra is worth it, and financing is available on approved credit through a third-party lending partner.
Hail, HOAs and Other Austin Questions
Hail is part of the conversation in Austin too. A metal roof rarely cracks or gets punctured and usually keeps out water after a storm, but big hail can leave dents that show, especially on smooth, light panels. If that matters to you, ask your insurance agent how your policy treats cosmetic damage before you choose.
If your neighborhood has a homeowners association, it may have rules on roof materials and colors. Check yours, and get approval if you need it, before settling on a panel color.
Why Austin Homeowners Talk to Viva About Metal
- Metal and shingle on one estimate. We install both, so your Austin roof gets priced both ways side by side.
- A look under the old roof first. On older Austin homes the decking and eaves get checked and photographed before we quote panels.
- Austin has its own salesperson. Our office is in Frisco, but the team member who handles our San Antonio work also covers Austin homes.
- Nothing starts without your OK. The panel system, finish, color and full scope are written down before any work begins.
